What is Smara?
Smara is a multilingual Hindu devotional companion app designed to support your daily spiritual practice. Available in English, Telugu, and Hindi, Smara brings together essential devotional tools in one place.
Why is it called Smara?
Smara — स्मर — carries the idea of "Remember."
The name comes from the Sanskrit root smṛ (स्मृ), meaning to remember, recollect, or keep in mind.
Remembrance has an important place in Hindu spiritual life. It may mean remembering the Divine, keeping a mantra or teaching in mind, observing a sacred day, continuing a daily practice, or carrying forward traditions received from earlier generations.
Smara was chosen with this sense of remembrance in mind: helping people remain connected with their devotional practice and traditions in everyday life.
Sanskrit words can carry more than one meaning and usage across different texts and periods. Smara has other classical usages as well, including as a name associated with Kāmadeva. The name of this platform specifically refers to the sense connected with smṛ — "to remember."
